Situational Awareness is not a sometimes thing - It’s a everyday thing.

Live Life, Travel Well

If it is accepted that there is a level of risk in our daily lives, both at work and beyond. Then it has to be true that having that engaged and appropriate level of situational awareness needs to be an everyday thing.

For all of us, at a given time, place and circumstance “bad stuff” crosses our path. This could be at work, on the way to work or outside of work. If we want to take responsibility for our personal safety and security then its incumbent on us to have that right level of situational awareness, everyday - Its why situational awareness is everyday awareness.

Situational Awareness - It’s an everyday thing

In our situational awareness workshops we run an interactive exercise of getting participants to write down all of the risk they consider in their daily lives. Before long, the wall space is full of post it notes. Risk which is real in peoples lives.

We seperate the “risk” into two sections, at work and beyond. It’s a reality check for everyone to see. It clearly shows that the risk is both real and different for different people.

A 23 year old women travelling on public transport and walking home at dusk has different risks which are real in her world and are different to those of a 45 year old male who drives to and from work and parks in the internal company car park.

Seeing what people are concerned about in their work and daily lives is a reality check on what is real. It is also an opportunity to put in place good life skills, which puts that risk into perspective and helps people deal with it.

And we deal with it with by having that engaged and appropriate level of situational awareness.

Therefore, that situational awareness is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You can’t have an engaged sense of situational awareness once in a while, you don't square away your safety & security once in a while, you do it all of the time. An engaged and appropriate level of situational awareness is a habit. It’s why you want to develop it as a life skill - it’s an all the time thing.

Situational Awareness - Engaged and Appropriate

A key point in getting people to develop their situational awareness, is to reinforce pulling on it at an engaged and appropriate level.

Yes, of course there is risk in our lives, and it is different, for different people in different vacations, in different environments. That is absolutely true. But risk is measured by likelihood and consequence and that needs to be kept in perspective.

Life is for living. And having an engaged and appropriate level of situational awareness is an enabler for that. Live life, travel, work, do what drives you - and do all of that with that engaged and appropriate level of situational awareness. That’s the simplicity of the message.

Situational Awareness - It’s a life skill

We’ve been facilitating, speaking, training around situational awareness for 10 years, both in NZ and abroad. It’s the client feedback that lifts us and the why, is because it sits at the heart of our vision “a safer world one client at a time”.
