Situational Awareness - The greatest skill you can acquire for your personal safety and security

Are you a parent or a teacher looking for an engaging Situational Awareness Training session for the teenagers and young women in your care. Let QRisk help build confidence and resilience by sharing our knowledge & expertise in situational awareness and basic self defence through this specifically designed course for teenagers.

What is Teenager Situational Awareness Training about?

It’s about giving young women the knowledge, skills and importantly the confidence to identify risk and make good decisions by adopting simple situational awareness strategies.

Situational Awareness Training is not a myth or a new training buzzword. It is very real, and we consider it the greatest skill you can acquire for your personal safety & security. Nothing is more important, at work, school, university, in travel, in life.

Situational awareness skills are there for everyone to develop, however it is acknowledged that there are unique risks for young women as they step towards adulthood and new environments, beyond the school gate and the home front door.

Socialising, driving, alcohol, drugs, relationship consent, harassment, backpacking, travel, university, work environments. These will present as risk flags at some point to many people.  Identifying these flags through good situational awareness is the first step to then adopting some strategies that safeguard you.

Risk exists - in any given lifestyle, vocation and occupation, that however should not inhibit us from doing what we want to do and where we want to go in life. Empowering people with good situational skills sets them up with confidence and good habits which when applied on a consistent and daily basis become life skills.

A Situational Awareness training course will give you the basic knowledge, skills and strategies to deal with those risks - Adopting and enabling it as a life skill is up to you.

Who is Teenager Situational Awareness Training for?

Well, teenagers.

Whilst it hasn’t been especially by design, those seeking and wanting this training has been mostly teenage young women, their parents and teachers.

The risks we talk to, while not exclusive to females,  are in reality mostlly targeted at women. It is in this space that we are empowering people through this particular course.

The course can be structured for different age groups. The key messages are the same, but the content, language, stories told are adapted accordingly.

With tailored courses delivered to ages 13 to 20+ we have you covered.

What is covered in the Self Defence

Attitude plus ! - That’s the key focus.

Any introductory session into self defence should be fun and engaging and have a focus on attitude and waking that aggression that sits inside of you, for when a real self-defence situation becomes a reality.

Obviously, it’s better not to be in those situations at all and this is where you want the situational awareness training to kick in - but sadly we live in world where “bad stuff happens to good people every day”.

If that day comes however then you will want to call upon a survival attitude, a positive mindset and appropriate aggression to see you through. Attitude over technique, that’s the focus of an introductory session.

QRisk Teenager Situational Awareness Courses

Situational Awareness Training  is  QRisk’s  foundational module. It is central to many of our courses and keynote presentations.  It underpins our key message that, “Situational Awareness  is the greatest skill you can acquire for your personal safety and security.” In this training course, specifically designed for teenage girls we focus on the risk that are more real in their world - and align the strategies to those risks.

We  have designed and delivered teenage situational awareness courses for different age groups and delivered these to both school groups and private groups throughout NZ. The content is largely the same, but the language, story, tone and delivery is moderated to the age groups.

Our delivery style is relaxed, open and inclusive, the teenagers (together with parents & teachers if they want to attend) are in their safe school environment which creates constructive interaction and they are free to explore any questions they might have.

Learn through story:  Supporting our key messages is powerful storytelling, and for this course there is no more powerful story than that of our training ambassador Noreen. Here is a story of a young Auckland women heading home one evening on a train. That trip changed her life and she now speaks to the value of situational awareness training. Participants will hear her story through the course and put themselves in her shoes and together we will create a different outcome.

At the completion of the course participants will achieve the following learning objectives:

  • Understanding risk and our bodies responses to risky & dangerous situations

  • Defining situational awareness and how to engage it

  • Understand key predatory signs from both strangers and non strangers

  • Learn Q6 - the simple model to help deal with any risk based situation

  • Effective easy to learn self defensive moves that are focused on attitude over technique

  • Have an understanding on NZ law and how it relates to you

The QRisk Situational Awareness & self defence course is typically run as a half day or full day depending on course design and up to 12 participants.
