Situational Awareness - Own It

Risk exists in our busy lives, the likelihood and subsequent consequence when something does occur can be an endless discussion.

Life is for living. That statement means a lot of different things to different people. Explore, travel, work, play. Seek adrenalin and live on the edge of adventure sports, all individual choices. But life is for living. This is planet earth and no one gets out alive, so get living. But do it safely, understand that risk exists and maximise the living.

Always understand where you are, what the situations is and what if any risk are about you. Own you're Situational Awareness.

Safety & Security Workplace Responsibility

Of course employers have a responsibility for people safety in the workplace. That is absolutely true, and backed up by legislation and a whole bunch of compliance requirements.

Taking ownership of your personal situational awareness, and your workplace safety doesn’t diminish that responsibility, rather the opposite is true.

People who have that engaged and appropriate level of situational awareness bring a life skill into the workplace environment. They make the workplace safer for themselves and others.

Situational Awareness is the enabler

Situationally aware people, are safer people. They understand risk, they call out risk flags - they are doers.

Being situationally aware means those closest to the risk own the risk. They are not taking over the employers accountability , but they are taking a healthy dose of personal responsibility.

Situationally aware people, ensure they are sufficiently trained, they raise issues, they put marks in the sand and don’t do work they are untrained in and they don’t hesitate to stop - when the risk flags warrant such action.

From the office environment, to the construction site, to working the farm - those that approach their working day with an engaged and appropriate level of situational awareness, are much more likely to get home safely at the end of the working day.

Own it - It’s your life

In our adult lives, no one should have a greater interest in our personal safety & security than ourselves. This is not a workplace statement, this is a life statement.

Understand risk in your environment at work and beyond. See it, acknowledge it, deal with it.

Those involved in adrenalin pumping outdoor sporting activities are not living life on a death wish. Most are acutely aware of the risk in their endeavours - they train themselves, make good decisions, live in the moment and they take a huge dose of personal responsibility. They live life. There is something we can all learn in that approach.
